I selected a particularly exciting destination for our final trip this year: the Canary Islands. This group of islands is part of Spain but is actually located just off the coast of Africa, far to the south of Spain itself. Mild temperatures all year round make the Canary Islands one of the most popular travel destinations for Europeans. And in late autumn, when it has turned cool and rainy even in the Mediterranean, we should still have warm, sunny weather there.
On two separate trips to scout for locations several years ago I visited all seven islands of the archipelago. I chose the two most interesting of them for our production this year: Fuerteventura and El Hierro. Fuerteventura, located in the east of the island group, is extremely dry and desert-like, with the most beautiful sandy beaches I have ever found anywhere. El Hierro is completely different: the smallest of the Canary Islands is a considerable distance apart from the others in the extreme south-west of the archipelago, and it is also the only one which is completely free of mass tourism. The mountains in the centre of the island reach a height of almost 1500 metres and are generally shrouded in cloud, producing a humid atmosphere which leaves the steep slopes covered in lush vegetation. The contrast between these two islands should provide us with a rich variety of locations, justifying this expensive trip.
