To wind up this year's summer season, I wanted to finally tackle a bigger project that I had already been tossing around in my head for nearly two years: a trip to Calabria, the region on the extreme southernmost part of the Italian mainland just before Sicily. Last summer, I sought out locations there and found, next to beautiful and varied beaches, many picturesque ruins, as well.
During the high season, it's supposed to be uncomfortably full there, so we chose the second week in September for our trip – not entirely without risk, as even the south may experience unpredictable weather conditions at this time of year. Due to the effort involved, I had to make long-range plans for this trip: my make-up artist Heike and I would drive for two days and take two girls with us. After two workdays, the first two girls would return to Germany by train, while two others would be on their way by train to Italy. The agency had a bit of a problem getting four girls together for this time-consuming tour, but it all worked out in the end.
