This bay, with an extensive sandy beach, is located some distance north of the town of Alghero in the north-west of Sardinia. The southern end
of the bay forms a headland, with rocks which have been eroded to perform bizarre shapes, crowned by the ruins of a watchtower. There is a second
ruined tower at the northern end of the bay. In olden times these towers were intended to provide early warning of approaching pirates, so the
population could be taken to safety and some sort of defence mounted. Since the pirates concerned were generally from northern Africa, the towers
are known to this day as "Saracen towers", based on the common general term for all Muslim people in those days.
