For a long period, and particularly between 1800 and 1970, Sardinia was an important source of mineral deposits; the southwest of the island
especially, around the Costa Verde, was dominated by mines. It is only a few decades ago that most of these mines were abandoned. Today the
majority of the mine buildings are remote ruins, slowly collapsing.
If you drive towards the beach from the small village of Ingurtosu (this is the road leading to the Hotel Le Dune), you come past the
dilapidated structure which was formerly the Naracauli Mine. These buildings are in far worse condition than the ruins of the Miniera di Pozzo
Sanna not far away, which also makes them less spectacular. On our first visit in the year 2004 it was still possible to walk around between the
buildings, though picking your way through the weeds and rubble was quite an effort and rather dangerous. But by the time we returned in 2006 the
whole area was fenced off.
