In the sparsely-populated interior region of Languedoc the small River Vis has cut through the soft limestone over the millennia to create an impressive geological spectacle 400 meters deep, a basin known as the Cirque de Navacelles. The main attraction of that region is the basin itself, along with the small village of Navacelles, the only settlement on the floor of the basin.
However, a far more attractive feature is a path which runs along the upper course of the Vis. It only takes an hour to trace the river back to its source, through a ravine with lush vegetation which takes you past some attractive rapids. There are almost always colorful butterflies and dragonflies to be observed here. And there is a ruined watermill at the source of the river.
