Not far from the small village of Sillans there is a spectacular waterfall, dropping vertically for 40 meters into a deep green basin. The basin can easily be reached and is quite suitable for swimming. Consequently the place is well-known and popular with visitors; where else can one go for a refreshing swim against such an impressive backdrop? Even the village is named after the waterfall, its full name being Sillans-la-Cascade.
The river further downstream is actually almost as interesting as the waterfall itself. As the water flows out of the basin it tumbles slowly down several steps in the limestone rocks, thus forming a whole series of small pools and rapids. The permanent high humidity provides ideal conditions for lush vegetation along the sides of the river, resulting in dense forests which are almost tropical in appearance.
