At the northern end of the island of Cres, near a village called Beli, there are a number of abandoned villages in the mountain forests - at least five of them and possibly more, all in a relatively confined area. I have not been able to obtain any information about these villages and the reason why the inhabitants left. Judging by the extent to which the buildings have decayed, and the objects that were left behind, it looks as though all the villages were abandoned at approximately the same time, 30 to 50 years ago.
These villages are located in dense forests high above the sea, at an altitude of between 300 and 400 meters. The remote character of these places, together with the resulting sense of solitude, creates a very special atmosphere. As a rule the only living creatures to be found there are a few sheep, which are allowed to run almost wild in this region and use the buildings for shelter.
We visited this location on 9/10/07 at 10:45 a.m. and on 9/8/09 at 9:30 a.m.
