"Sotavento" means "turned away from the wind", because this beach is located on the south-east on the Jandia Peninsula, and the wind usually comes from the north. However, that does not mean there is no wind here: the special geography of the peninsula causes what is known as a jet effect in this region, which means that Playa de Sotavento is one of the best places in the Canary Islands for surfing. In fact, world championship events in windsurfing and kite surfing are held here.
But this wide, long beach is also very suitable for swimming, since it descends to the water at a shallow angle. A sandbank close to the shore creates a large lagoon at low tide, where children can happily splash around. At the southern end of the beach there is an attractive area of sand dunes.
