El Jable means "the sand" in the ancient language of the Canaries. And there is not much to be found in this area in the north-eastern part of Fuerteventura apart from sand: 24 square kilometres of sandy dunes, in fact. If you walk out into the sand far enough, it is easy to imagine that you are in the middle of a genuine desert. The mountains of loose sand are kept in constant motion by the north-east passat wind.
But the area is not at all as barren as it may look at first sight: 17 species of animals and 18 types of vegetation have managed to adapt to the extreme conditions here. In 1982 the entire area was classified as a nature
reserve.
At the place where the dune area meets the sea there are some very fine sandy beaches, though due to the proximity of the huge holiday resort of Corralejo they are rather overcrowded.
